Project 2: Small Community Structure (10% group)
In Project 1B, we focused on designing a small community structure that explores the relationship between materiality, user experience, and environmental poetry. This project builds on the site analysis and community needs identified in Project 1A. Through hands-on design, material research, and construction details, we aimed to create a meaningful and sustainable space that supports community activity within Taman Wawasan Recreational Park.
Task Summary
-
Each tutorial group splits into two teams (5–6 students per team) to design one small structure per team.
-
The structure should fit within approx. 3m x 3m x 6m or 50sqm, located on flat ground within the assigned site.
-
Begin with quick sketches, diagrams, and written notes to brainstorm initial ideas and materials.
-
Research joinery details and create exploded axonometric drawings to study construction and assembly.
-
Elemental Model: Build a physical model representing structure, materials, and finishes.
-
Final Design Board: Produce 1 A0 board that includes functional diagrams and ergonomic studies, plans, section, and elevation, One detailed section, Axonometric assembly drawing, Rendered perspective views and Material sources and specifications

REFLECTION
In this project, we designed a small community structure specifically for children with autism to address a key shortcoming identified during our site analysis of Taman Wawasan. Currently, the park lacks inclusive facilities that cater to the needs of these children, who are often confined to the sidelines while other children play. Our design aims to change this.
By creating a safe, engaging, and sensory-friendly space, we wanted to encourage movement and physical activity in a controlled environment. The structure not only provides a dedicated play area but also minimizes the risk of children wandering unsupervised in the park. Through this project, I've learned how thoughtful design can promote inclusivity and make public spaces more appealing to every member of the community.
Throughout the project, I communicated ideas clearly through sketches, models, and presentations to express how the structure responds to specific user needs.
COMMUNICATION SKILL

INTERPERSONAL SKILL
Working in a small group taught me the importance of collaboration, where we shared responsibilities and made collective decisions to ensure our design met its goals.
