PROJECT 1: Contextual Study Sketch Journal of a Traditional Street (30% individual)
In this project, we will explore the relationship between architecture and its social, cultural, and intellectual context in the traditional streets of Kuala Lumpur. As the city globalizes, these streets undergo significant transformations. The project involves analyzing both the architectural qualities and the socio-cultural attributes of these streets. Students will conduct fieldwork, record observations in a sketch journal, and write a summary to demonstrate their understanding of how these contexts construct place identity. Expected outcomes include a sketch journal and a summary that highlight the interplay between architecture and its socio-cultural environments.
OUTCOME
REFLECTION
Through this project, I have greatly deepened my understanding of how social, cultural, economic, and political factors shape the characteristics of traditional streets. By conducting fieldwork, I was able to directly interact with both the material and socio-cultural aspects of these urban areas. This immersive experience highlighted the role of architectural styles, historical events, and social institutions in preserving community cultural heritage. From this project, I realized that context is crucial in architectural analysis. Exploring Jalan Tun H.S. Lee revealed the profound impact of urban development on traditional street environments. Additionally, the project honed my research skills, enabling me to effectively collect and synthesize information from various sources to enhance my field observations. This project also improved my drawing and architectural sketching skills. Moreover, I became aware of my need to improve my skills in using color. In summary, this project broadened my understanding of the interaction between architecture and its socio-cultural and economic contexts. It emphasized the importance of historical context and detailed observation in studying urban spaces.
PROJECT 2: Poster and Seminar-Contemporary Issues in Asian Architecture (50% Group)
Project 2 is a group project consisting of 6-7 members. In this project, we need to address a significant issue observed in Project 1. To expand our research scope, we will focus on one of the following areas: architecture and place identity, adaptive reuse of traditional architecture, sustainable heritage tourism, or cultural spaces in cities. We will conduct a thorough literature review to identify specific issues and the significance of our chosen research direction, which will help us define the research scope. This project will create a research title that clearly reflects the focus and importance of our work. We need to produce a research poster that includes examples of other Asian architectural designs to support our analysis and present and evaluate our research findings through a video presentation.
OUTCOME
REFLECTION
This project has helped expand my understanding of the challenges faced by contemporary Asian architecture. Through a case study on Jalan Tun H.S. Lee, specifically focusing on the impact of the Lee Rubber Building, I have deeply realized how these historic buildings influence the local architectural landscape and regional character. The Lee Rubber Building plays a crucial role in shaping the unique identity of this street. Its architectural style blends traditional elements, highlighting how historical intersections contribute to the city's ongoing evolution. I have learned to critically evaluate different architectural themes, understanding the delicate balance between preserving cultural heritage and embracing modern innovation. Additionally, working with team members on creating research posters and video presentations has improved my ability to effectively convey complex ideas visually and verbally, which are important skills in the field of architecture. Overall, this project has been a valuable learning experience, giving me a deeper understanding of Asian architecture within its socio-cultural and economic contexts. By focusing on areas that need improvement, I can further enhance the quality and depth of my future architectural research and presentations.
