Project 2: Designing with Architectural Principles + Materiality (30% Group)

This project aims to inspire reflection and discussion on spatial quality through architectural conceptualization, with a focus on design intent and objectives. It emphasizes the importance of craftsmanship and making, treating drawings and models as essential tools in the design process. We need to use architecture to develop the ability to design simple structures and demonstrate a fundamental understanding of materials and details to capture the experiential qualities of the design. This approach underscores the indispensable role of hands-on creation in realizing architectural concepts.

REFLECTION

This group project was a highly meaningful experience, allowing me to apply theoretical knowledge to a real-world design challenge. Our  goal was to design a structure that could be used both for stargazing and for enjoying the scenic beauty of a lake. The observation tower project was a valuable learning experience that enhanced my architectural skills. By applying professional knowledge and developing interpersonal skills, I am now better prepared to tackle complex design challenges and effectively contribute to team projects in the field of architecture.

DICIPLINE AND SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE

INTERPERSONAL SKILL

This project provided me with the opportunity to apply architectural theories in a real-world context. By integrating concepts such as site analysis, structural integrity, and environmental sustainability, our design reflected a deep understanding of professional practices within the field of architecture. For instance, we had to consider how the tower’s orientation and materials would affect its interaction with the natural surroundings, ensuring that it not only met functional requirements but also harmonized with the landscape.

Working on this group project also helped me develop strong interpersonal skills, particularly in understanding team dynamics. In the early stages of the project, our group faced challenges in aligning our ideas and visions for the observatory tower. However, by fostering open communication and respecting each member’s input, we were able to create a collaborative environment that leveraged our diverse skills and perspectives.
