P1a : Pre-Design Studies & Analysis
For the first phase of the study, students in group were required to investigate, study and analyze the site to understand valuable components before designing. The study will enable students to gain familiarity with the site. To be immersed by 'sensing the place' allowing each to look into the current conditions of the site and relate it to the target user and objectives of the project. Hence, developing the most appropriate strategy and programme for it.

Before starting Phase 1, our batch went on a site visit to George Town, Penang, where we were divided into two different site groups. My group was assigned to Site B, located next to Sia Boey Archaeological Park. We began by conducting a comprehensive site analysis to better understand the surrounding context and activities.
For the Genius Loci study, I worked together with one of my group members on demographic mapping. We observed the movement and activities of people around the site during both weekdays and weekends at three different time periods. We also documented the different user groups found within and around the site. Through this process, I gained a better understanding of how patterns of human activity, time, and user demographics can influence the character and use of a place.
After completing the site analysis, we moved on to Phase 1 of the project. Within our tutorial group, tasks were divided among the members, and I was responsible for the urban intervention section. My contribution included producing the intervention visuals for the presentation board and slides, as well as several sketches for other parts of the presentation. Throughout the process, we presented our progress to our tutor every week, received feedback, and continuously refined our work until the final presentation.
This phase helped me understand the importance of observation, teamwork, and continuous design development. It also allowed me to improve my visual communication skills and recognise how site analysis can be translated into design ideas and urban interventions.

Working collaboratively with my group allowed me to improve my teamwork and communication skills. By dividing tasks, sharing ideas, and responding to weekly tutor feedback, I learned how to contribute effectively towards a common project outcome.
Through demographic mapping and site observation, I learned to critically analyse user activities and movement patterns at different times. These findings helped me better understand the site context and translate the analysis into appropriate urban intervention ideas.
