ASSIGNMENT 1: Sustainable Future City Ideas: Resilient Future Cities and Reflective Writing (60% Group +Individual)

This assignment focuses on envisioning and proposing concepts for a sustainable, disaster-resilient city of the future. Building on knowledge from the module and insights from Assignment 1, students will explore how economic, social, and environmental strategies can be integrated into urban design to create resilient, inclusive, and livable environments. The project emphasizes originality, human–environment relationships, and innovative approaches, while also reflecting on the learning experience and its application to professional practice.

TASK

  1. Students will develop a proposal for a future sustainable city that is resilient to natural disasters, applying relevant frameworks and precedents from Assignment 1. The proposal should address:

  2. Economic Sustainability – growth, development, productivity

  3. Social Sustainability – equity, empowerment, accessibility, cultural identity

  4. Environmental Sustainability – ecosystem integrity, carrying capacity, disaster resilience

  5. Ecomasterplanning – red, blue, green, and grey infrastructure

  6. Disaster Resilience – flood mitigation, preparedness, and recovery

  7. The final submission will include:

  • A presentation showcasing the concept through infographics, visuals, and text.

  • A reflective report (1000 words) divided into three parts

REFLECTION

This assignment challenged me to think creatively and practically about designing a sustainable, disaster-resilient city of the future. It required integrating knowledge from previous research in Assignment 1 with innovative concepts that addressed economic, social, and environmental sustainability. By exploring frameworks such as ecomasterplanning and disaster mitigation strategies, I developed a deeper understanding of how urban design can enhance resilience and quality of life. The process strengthened my ability to propose realistic yet visionary solutions while maintaining a strong connection between human needs and environmental responsibility.
