PROJECT 1: Poetic Assemblage:  Choreography + Envelope (20% Group)

Project 1 combines group project in research with individual creativity and experimental design. It introduces a poetic design approach inspired by native culture-based contemporary dance. We need to observe and document choreographic movements using ethnographic drawings, including plan and elevation mapping, to understand the dance through both observation and drawing.

The project outcome is a Choreography-Informed Envelope, a flagship structure inspired by a Pas de Deux, emphasizing bodily awareness, emotional expression, and experimentation. The design must reflect a unique idea and align with a specific scale, setting the stage for future on-site discussions.

REFLECTION

This project was an inspiring exploration of the interplay between dance, culture, and spatial design. It challenged me to integrate movement and spatial awareness into a creative process. By observing and documenting native culture-inspired contemporary dance through ethnographic drawings, I gained a deeper understanding of how bodily movements and cultural narratives shape space. I also learned how to transform fixed points, rhythm, and movement in dance into three-dimensional space while making it more poetic.

Through this group project, I gained insights into different ideas and learning approaches from my coursemates. Additionally, this project brought me closer to my coursemates, strengthening our bond.

THINKING AND PROBLEM SOLVING SKILLS

This project integrates architectural theory into practice by translating choreographic movements into spatial design, demonstrating a clear application of discipline-specific knowledge. It also reflects an understanding of professional practices in architectural design by connecting cultural narratives with innovative form-making.

The project requires critical and creative thinking to analyze and interpret dance movements, and to translate these into innovative and expressive architectural forms. Additionally, it involves problem-solving to effectively synthesize the ephemeral qualities of dance into tangible spatial concepts.
