Phase 1 : Preliminary studies – Townscape Appraisal & Mini Urban Intervention

Preliminary studies – Townscape Appraisal & Mini Urban Intervention (15%)
This project introduces urban design and place-making through the study of Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur. The Townscape Appraisal looks at the area's visual, spatial, social, and cultural aspects at both larger and smaller scales. It focuses on understanding the character, identity, and sense of place, using SWOT analysis. The Mini Urban Intervention suggests small-scale design ideas within a 15–20 meter radius of the chosen site to activate underused spaces and improve public life. This phase lays the groundwork for future design stages, aiming to create a Learning Institution that is in tune with the urban context and local identity.

REFLECTION

This project was an inspiring exploration of the interplay between dance, culture, and spatial design. It challenged me to integrate movement and spatial awareness into a creative process. By observing and documenting native culture-inspired contemporary dance through ethnographic drawings, I gained a deeper understanding of how bodily movements and cultural narratives shape space. I also learned how to transform fixed points, rhythm, and movement in dance into three-dimensional space while making it more poetic.

Through this group project, I gained insights into different ideas and learning approaches from my coursemates. Additionally, this project brought me closer to my coursemates, strengthening our bond.

LIFELONG LEARNING

THINKING AND PROBLEM SOLVING SKILLS

In this project, I developed my Lifelong Learning skills by independently analyzing the Brickfields area using Ian Bentley's Responsive Environment book. I effectively used the information to understand the site and engaged intellectually with its context. I also learned new tools, like visual maps, to communicate my ideas better.

For Thinking and Problem-Solving, I applied critical thinking to identify how users perceive the urban environment. I creatively presented my findings through a perspective view map, offering a visual solution to the problem of user interaction with the space.
