Project 3: Reclaimed Architecture: A Dance Annexe (60% Group)
In this project, we need to design Reclaimed Architecture: A Dance Annexe to preserve and promote local native dance culture. This two-storey, standalone building (350–450 sqm, with up to 1000mm of sunken depth allowed) will serve as an extension of Encore Melaka Theatre, supporting cultural and public engagement. Students may choose between the Strait-Site, extending into the sea, or the Park-Site, opposite the theatre’s main entrance. The design must employ universal accessibility, align with the context, and integrate methodologies from previous weeks to create a monolithic architectural form that fosters cultural preservation.

REFLECTION
In this project, I incorporated concepts from my previous work and integrated t5he historical stories of the Kristang community into my design. This process has been a valuable learning experience, allowing me to explore how architecture can preserve and promote local culture while supporting culture revival. Designing the Dance Annexe for Malacca's native dance culture challenged me to apply design methods in a way that respects the cultural and historical context of the site. Choosing the strait-site pushed me to think critically about how the building would interact with its surroundings, while also prioritising accessibility for all.
My intention for this project is to help preserve the Kristang community and ensure their rich heritage is celebrated and passed on to future generations. Through creative exploration of space, materiality, and form, I gained a deeper understanding of how architecture can connect people to their heritage and community. I hope my design embodies the idea of cultural endurance and contributes to the revival and lasting legacy of the Kristang community.

LIFELONG LERANING
Throughout this project, I had the opportunity to learn independently by researching local dance culture, architectural precedents, and site conditions. I also developed the ability to locate, extract, and synthesize information effectively from various sources, which helped me make informed decisions in my design process.
COMMUNICATION SKILL

This project required me to clearly and effectively communicate my design concepts through a variety of means including drawings, sketches and oral presentations. Being able to present my concepts convincingly and obtaining constructive feedback from fellow students and tutors was crucial in refining my design proposal. Effective communication also allowed me to express my design concepts and ideas clearly so that the tutor could understand them and give advice on how to improve them.
